IKEA SMÅSTAD Loft Bed Assembly in London

IKEA SMÅSTAD Loft Bed Assembly in London

The SMÅSTAD loft bed is genuinely one of the longest builds IKEA sells: a raised 90x200 cm bed over a desk, wardrobe and open storage, spanning three assembly manuals and roughly 140 instruction pages for the frame alone, with full combinations adding five more manuals across the KONSTRUERA and HJÄLPA parts. IKEA itself specifies two people for the job.

TaskMan of London builds SMÅSTAD loft beds across London, everywhere within the M25, with a DBS-checked, insured two-person team and a 12-month workmanship warranty. We schedule this build as the substantial job it is rather than squeezing it between other visits.

To get started, message us on WhatsApp with photos of the room, your IKEA order confirmation and your ceiling height. We confirm everything with you — layout choices, timings and your quote — before anything is booked.

Which IKEA SMÅSTAD loft bed (90x200 cm loft bed system with desk, wardrobe and storage) sizes we build

  • SMÅSTAD loft bed frame with desk and storage, white, 90x200 cm — article 504.540.36. Frame-only: bed deck, guard rail, ladder, desk, wardrobe carcass and open shelf; no doors, drawers, hinges or clothes rail. Ships as 6 packages. Verified live on ikea.com/gb/en, 18 Aug 2026.
  • SMÅSTAD loft bed, white/white with desk with 3 drawers, 90x200 cm — article 594.288.73, 19 packages. Verified live 18 Aug 2026.
  • SMÅSTAD loft bed, white/white with desk with 4 drawers, 90x200 cm — article 994.288.66, 21 packages. Both drawer combinations are full builds: compared with the frame-only option they include the wardrobe door, KONSTRUERA drawers, HJÄLPA soft-close hinges, adjustable clothes rail and suspension rail.
  • SMÅSTAD loft bed, white, with desk with 2 shelves, 90x200 cm — combination ID s89520158, 21 packages. Verified live 17 Aug 2026.
  • Coloured combinations are also live on IKEA UK (verified 18 Aug 2026): white/light green with desk with 3 drawers (s29542021) and 4 drawers (s79542028), and white/blue with desk with 3 drawers (s89542023) and 4 drawers (s59542637); the colour picker also offers a lilac option.
  • Knobs and handles are sold separately on all combinations, as is the mattress.

SMÅSTAD is not being discontinued. IKEA's October 2024 announcement concerns the MALM and HEMNES chest-of-drawers lines, which are being replaced (by STORKLINTA and GULLABERG) and discontinued by the end of 2026 — UK coverage describes parts of the MALM range going from summer 2026. That announcement does not cover SMÅSTAD, which is IKEA's current children's storage-and-bed system and on sale on IKEA UK today. Individual colours and combinations do rotate, so check your exact combination is in stock before ordering.

How long IKEA SMÅSTAD loft bed (90x200 cm loft bed system with desk, wardrobe and storage) assembly takes

These are TaskMan of London's own working estimates, confirmed on WhatsApp once we've seen photos of the room and your order: roughly 150–240 minutes for the frame-only build (504.540.36) and 180–300 minutes for a full combination with doors, drawers, hinges and clothes rail, working as a two-person team. The frame alone runs to three manuals and about 140 instruction pages, and full combinations add five more manuals across the KONSTRUERA and HJÄLPA parts — this is genuinely one of the longest builds IKEA sells, and we schedule it accordingly rather than squeezing it between other jobs.

Difficulty: very hard. Long builds are exactly what we are set up for — message us and we will confirm everything before you book.

Where IKEA SMÅSTAD loft bed (90x200 cm loft bed system with desk, wardrobe and storage) builds go wrong

The parts of this build that cost people an afternoon:

  • The frame manual (AA-2200882, 60 pages) contains TWO complete mirrored build sequences — one for the ladder/wardrobe on the right, one for the left. Families regularly follow the wrong half and only discover it when panels are cammed together the wrong way round. The ladder side must be decided against the real room (door swing, window, radiator) before step 1, not at the ladder step.
  • The desk can be assembled parallel or perpendicular to the bed, and the drawer/shelf unit position changes with it — the desk manual (AA-2200883) shows four different end configurations. Changing your mind after the desk top is on means partial disassembly, so we agree the layout with you before we start.
  • Drawer runners in the desk unit go into numbered pre-drilled hole positions (the manual highlights counts of 2, 8, 14 and 20 from the bottom). Being one hole out on one side is the classic cause of a drawer that sits crooked or won't close — count twice, fit once.
  • The bed deck is built flat on the floor and then lifted onto the gables: you need clear floor space roughly the size of the bed plus room to walk around it, and something soft underneath — the white foil finish marks easily on bare floorboards.
  • The long through-bolts take nuts tightened with the supplied combination open-end/ring spanner. If you fully tighten them before the deck is squared up, the remaining bolt holes stop lining up. Snug everything, square the frame, then torque.
  • The two oval plastic ladder mouldings clip together one way only — the manual marks this with a warning triangle. Forced the wrong way round, the clips snap and IKEA spare-parts is your only fix.
  • Five self-adhesive anti-slip strips for the ladder treads are in the frame pack (part 121108) and are easy to overlook at the end of a long day — they should go onto clean, dust-free treads before the first climb.
  • KONSTRUERA drawers (in the drawer combinations) use hammered wedge dowels into honeycomb-core panels. Over-enthusiastic hammering without supporting the panel edge blows the face out of the board.
  • Full combinations arrive as 19–21 packages spanning several product names (SMÅSTAD, KONSTRUERA, HJÄLPA) — check every box against the order confirmation before starting. A missing hinge or rail pack discovered mid-build strands the job.
  • A standard UK single mattress (90x190 cm) is the wrong size: this bed takes 90x200 cm, and the frame has a marked maximum mattress thickness of 20 cm — thicker mattresses reduce the effective guard-rail height.
  • Knobs and handles are not in any of the boxes — they are sold separately, and IKEA's own guidance is not to screw hooks or handles onto the bed itself where a child could catch.

Safety and wall fixing

  • IKEA's age guidance: high beds and the upper bed of bunk or loft beds are not suitable for children under 6 years, due to the risk of falls.
  • Maximum load 100 kg; maximum mattress thickness 20 cm (marked in the manual) so the guard rail keeps its protective height; mattress size 90x200 cm.
  • Minimum ceiling height 240 cm — the bed platform is at 182 cm and a child needs safe sitting headroom above the mattress.
  • IKEA's warning: do not screw hooks or handles onto the bed or hang ropes, cords or belts where a child could become caught.
  • The ladder mounts left or right and hooks over the bed rail with dedicated fixings plus anti-slip tread strips — all five strips should be fitted before first use.
  • The loft bed itself is designed freestanding (205 x 104 cm footprint): none of the three frame manuals contains a wall-anchoring step. Any additional tall SMÅSTAD/PLATSA storage bought alongside it does need anchoring to the wall per IKEA's tip-over guidance — our team fits those restraints as standard with appropriate fixings for your wall type.
  • Our own practice at TaskMan of London: a full end-of-build check that every cam, bolt and nut is tightened, the guard rail is secure and the ladder is locked before anyone climbs it — and we recommend re-checking bolt tightness after the first few weeks of use, as with any child's high bed.

IKEA SMÅSTAD loft bed (90x200 cm loft bed system with desk, wardrobe and storage) assembly in London homes

The frame-only product ships as 6 packages totalling around 156 kg, and the four largest boxes are 206 cm long by 64 cm wide at roughly 24–28 kg each (verified from IKEA UK package data, Aug 2026). Boxes over two metres long will not fit in many London lift cars, so in mansion blocks and converted houses they usually come up the stairwell — tight Victorian half-landing turns are the pinch point, and two carriers per box is the realistic minimum. Full combinations are 19–21 packages, so kerbside delivery to a second-floor flat is a job in itself before a single cam lock is turned. The bed must be assembled in the child's room (the deck is built flat on the floor and raised onto the gables), needing roughly 2.1 x 1.1 m of clear floor plus working space, and the 240 cm minimum ceiling height is exactly the standard ceiling in many London new-builds — and often more than a loft conversion has — so we ask for a ceiling measurement with your WhatsApp photos as a matter of course. TaskMan of London covers everywhere inside the M25 with a DBS-checked, insured two-person team and a 12-month workmanship warranty.

Before we arrive

  • Measure your ceiling: 240 cm minimum. Many London new-builds are exactly 2.4 m and loft conversions are often less — send us the measurement on WhatsApp with your photos before booking.
  • Clear the room. The bed deck is assembled flat on the floor then raised, so we need floor space roughly 2.1 x 1.1 m plus working room around it — the bed is built in the room it will live in and cannot be carried in assembled.
  • Decide (or ask us to advise on) two layout choices before the visit: ladder on the left or right, and desk parallel or perpendicular to the bed. Both are locked in early in the build.
  • Check all packages against your IKEA order confirmation on delivery day — frame-only is 6 boxes, full combinations 19–21 boxes across SMÅSTAD, KONSTRUERA and HJÄLPA labels — and tell us on WhatsApp if anything is missing before we set off.
  • Have a 90x200 cm mattress (max 20 cm thick) ready — a standard UK 90x190 single won't fit properly. Knobs/handles are also sold separately if you want them on the wardrobe and drawers.
  • Let us know about parking, floor number, lift dimensions and any tight stair turns — the longest boxes are 206 cm and won't fit in many lift cars, so they may need to come up the stairs.

IKEA SMÅSTAD loft bed (90x200 cm loft bed system with desk, wardrobe and storage) assembly FAQs

How long does the SMÅSTAD loft bed really take to assemble?

It is one of the longest builds in the IKEA catalogue: the frame alone spans three manuals and roughly 140 instruction pages, and full combinations add doors, soft-close hinges, drawers and clothes rail on top. DIY owner reports range from about 4 hours to 16; IKEA specifies two people. As our own working estimate, a two-person TaskMan of London team typically completes the frame in around 2.5–4 hours and a full combination in around 3–5 hours. Message us on WhatsApp with photos of the room and your order and we'll confirm everything before booking.

What age is the SMÅSTAD loft bed suitable for?

IKEA's guidance is that high beds and the upper bed of bunk or loft beds are not suitable for children under 6 years, because of the risk of injury from falls. The upper bed carries a maximum load of 100 kg.

Does the loft bed need to be fixed to the wall?

The loft bed itself is designed to be freestanding — its footprint is 205 x 104 cm and none of IKEA's assembly manuals for it includes a wall-fixing step. Tall storage units bought alongside it are a different matter: those do need anchoring to the wall, and we fit the restraints with fixings appropriate to your wall as part of the job.

Will my existing single mattress fit?

Probably not — this bed takes a 90x200 cm mattress, while a standard UK single is 90x190 cm. The frame is also marked with a 20 cm maximum mattress thickness so the guard rail keeps enough height above the sleeping surface.

Do I need a certain ceiling height?

IKEA specifies a minimum ceiling height of 240 cm. The bed platform sits at 182 cm with 142 cm of clearance underneath for the desk and wardrobe. Plenty of London flats — especially loft conversions and some new-builds — sit right at or below 2.4 m, so measure before you buy and send us the number on WhatsApp.

Can the bed be moved to another room or house later?

It is assembled in the room it will live in — the finished unit is about 205 cm long, 104 cm deep and 182 cm tall and will not go through a doorway in one piece. Moving it means partial disassembly and rebuilding; cam-and-dowel furniture tolerates a limited number of rebuilds, so plan its position carefully first. We can advise on layout (ladder side, desk orientation) over WhatsApp before we start.

Is the SMÅSTAD range being discontinued like MALM and HEMNES?

No. IKEA's October 2024 announcement covers the MALM and HEMNES chest-of-drawers lines, which are being replaced by new ranges and discontinued by the end of 2026 — UK reports describe parts of the MALM range going from summer 2026. It does not cover SMÅSTAD, which is IKEA's current children's storage-and-bed system and is on sale on IKEA UK today. Individual colours and combinations do rotate, so check your exact combination is in stock before ordering.
