IKEA FRIHETEN Corner Sofa-Bed Assembly in London
IKEA FRIHETEN Corner Sofa-Bed Assembly in London
The IKEA FRIHETEN corner sofa-bed with storage is one of the most popular sofa-beds in the UK — and one of the heaviest flat-pack builds most Londoners ever attempt. The standard corner version arrives as three packages totalling 112.7 kg, with a 207 cm backrest carton that famously refuses to go round half-landings or into small lifts. It is firmly a two-person job from the kerb to the final bolt.
TaskMan of London builds FRIHETEN sofa-beds across London within the M25 with a two-person, DBS-checked, insured team, and every build carries our 12-month workmanship warranty. Typical assembly time is 60–90 minutes for the standard corner version, based on our own repeat builds.
Send us WhatsApp photos of the boxes, the room and any tight stairs or lift, and we will confirm everything — including a realistic total for the job — before you book.

FRIHETEN is not being discontinued. The widely reported IKEA phase-out covers the MALM and HEMNES chests of drawers by the end of 2026 (IKEA has introduced the STORKLINTA and GULLABERG ranges in their place) — it does not cover other MALM or HEMNES products, and it does not include FRIHETEN. All variants listed here were live on ikea.com/gb/en when we last checked (18 August 2026). IKEA UK also sells the newer ÄLVDALEN sofa-bed alongside FRIHETEN, including a version with a chaise longue, though IKEA does not market ÄLVDALEN as a corner sofa-bed.
How long IKEA FRIHETEN corner sofa-bed with storage assembly takes
60–90 minutes for the standard FRIHETEN corner sofa-bed with a two-person TaskMan of London team; 90–120 minutes for the FRIHETEN / KLAGSHAMN version (extra mattress-pad and cover packages) or where boxes must first be carried up stairs. These are TaskMan of London's own working estimates from repeat builds, not IKEA figures — a realistic total is always confirmed on WhatsApp before booking.
Difficulty: moderate. Long builds are exactly what we are set up for — message us and we will confirm everything before you book.
Where IKEA FRIHETEN corner sofa-bed with storage builds go wrong
The parts of this build that cost people an afternoon:
- The backrest package is 207 cm long and weighs 36.6 kg — the longest of the three packages. It is the box that gets stuck on half-landings and won't fit in many London residential lifts, so the route needs checking before delivery day, not on it.
- All three packages arrive heavy and mostly pre-upholstered (34.5–41.6 kg per package, 112.7 kg total for the corner version). Dragging them across the floor instead of lifting scuffs floors and can tear the fabric wrapped under the bases — every move is a two-person lift.
- The chaise storage lid must seat correctly on its hinge brackets: an owner-reported problem is the lid slipping down into the storage box under a seated person when the metal edges by the hinge don't rest on the brackets. We check the lid's seating and hinge-arm alignment as a final step rather than assuming it is right.
- Backrest-to-base fixings need to be started loosely across all holes and only then tightened evenly — tightening the first bolt fully pulls the remaining holes out of line, which is where most DIY builds stall.
- The chaise can go left or right and can be switched later, but the room decision still matters before assembly: the fold-out bed (140 × 204 cm) needs clear floor in front of the seat, so we position and test the pull-out before the sofa's final placement — it is a heavy unit to walk back across a room.
- Uneven period-flat floors show up in this sofa as a storage lid that sits proud on one side and a bed that racks slightly when pulled out; packers under the feet at the right corner solve what looks like a build fault.
- We operate the pull-out mechanism and fold the backrest down and up several times before leaving — a stiff first pull is normal, a scraping one means a missed washer or a rubbing frame edge that is far easier to fix while the tools are still out.
Safety and wall fixing
- Two-person lifts throughout: the heaviest single package (chaise section with storage) is a 41.6 kg package weight, and the assembled sofa should be lifted, never dragged, when repositioned — this is TaskMan of London's own working practice.
- The fold-out bed frame and the storage lid hinge are pinch points — our fitters keep hands clear of the hinge arms while cycling the mechanism, and we ask that children are kept away from the open storage compartment during and after the build.
- Bomstad black is a coated fabric (IKEA describes it as having the same look and feel as leather) that marks more easily during assembly — we keep sections on dust sheets until final placement.
- This is a freestanding sofa: no wall fixing is involved in our build, and stability comes from correct leg fitting and even bolt tension.
IKEA FRIHETEN corner sofa-bed with storage assembly in London homes
Verified from the live IKEA UK product pages (18 August 2026): the standard corner version arrives as 3 packages totalling 112.7 kg — backrest 207 × 64 × 26 cm (36.6 kg), chaise section with storage 146 × 74 × 40 cm (41.6 kg), seat section 139 × 82 × 40 cm (34.5 kg), all package weights; the KLAGSHAMN version is 5 packages at 119.05 kg. The 207 cm backrest carton is longer than the internal depth of most residential lifts and is the box that jams on winding Victorian-conversion staircases, so route photos via WhatsApp before booking decide whether it is a straightforward carry or a two-person stairwell manoeuvre. The finished sofa is 230 × 151 cm and is built in its final room — in typical London flats that means clearing the room first, because walking the assembled unit through internal doors is rarely possible. Coverage is London within the M25, with a DBS-checked, insured two-person team and a 12-month workmanship warranty on the build.
Before we arrive
- Measure the access route before delivery: the longest package is 207 × 64 × 26 cm — check stair turns, lift internal depth and door widths against that figure.
- Clear a working area roughly 2.5 × 2 m in the room where the sofa will live; this sofa is built where it stands, as the finished unit is 230 × 151 cm and heavy to relocate.
- Decide which side the chaise longue should go (it can be switched later, but knowing saves time) and check there is clear floor for the 140 × 204 cm fold-out bed.
- Send WhatsApp photos of the boxes, the room, and any tight stairs or lift — that is how TaskMan of London confirms everything, including a realistic total, before you book.
- Plan for the packaging: three large cartons plus internal card and film for the standard corner version, five packages for the KLAGSHAMN variant.
IKEA FRIHETEN corner sofa-bed with storage assembly FAQs
How long does the FRIHETEN corner sofa-bed take to assemble?
TaskMan of London's own working estimate is 60–90 minutes with a two-person team for the standard corner version, and 90–120 minutes for the FRIHETEN / KLAGSHAMN version or where stairs slow the carry-in. We confirm a realistic total on WhatsApp with photos before you book.
Can one person build a FRIHETEN?
Realistically no. The three main packages weigh 34.5–41.6 kg each and the backrest join needs the section held level while bolts are started. TaskMan of London treats this as a strictly two-person build and always sends two people.
Will the boxes fit up my stairs or in my lift?
The three packages for the corner version measure 207 × 64 × 26 cm, 146 × 74 × 40 cm and 139 × 82 × 40 cm (112.7 kg total package weight). The 207 cm backrest box is the usual sticking point in London conversions and small lifts — send us photos of the route and we will tell you before booking.
Which side does the chaise longue go?
Either. IKEA's product page confirms the chaise longue section can be placed left or right of the sofa and switched whenever you like. We still agree the orientation with you before the build so the fold-out bed has clear floor in front.
What is the difference between FRIHETEN and FRIHETEN / KLAGSHAMN?
The KLAGSHAMN version adds a roll-out mattress pad that rolls up into a long back cushion, and arrives as five packages instead of three (119.05 kg total package weight against 112.7 kg). The base and mechanism assembly is the same; the pad adds unpacking and set-up time.
Is the FRIHETEN being discontinued like MALM and HEMNES?
No. The widely reported IKEA phase-out covers the MALM and HEMNES chests of drawers by the end of 2026 and does not include FRIHETEN — all the variants listed here were live on ikea.com/gb/en when we last checked (18 August 2026). IKEA's newer ÄLVDALEN sofa-bed is sold alongside FRIHETEN in the UK, and IKEA does not market it as a corner sofa-bed.
Do you take the packaging away?
We break the cartons down flat for your recycling as standard; tell us on WhatsApp if you need removal arranged and we will build it into the confirmed total.
