IKEA IDANÄS Wardrobe Assembly in London
IKEA IDANÄS Wardrobe Assembly in London
The IDANÄS wardrobe is one of IKEA's more demanding flat-pack builds: a 211 cm tall carcass in honeycomb-core panels joined by one-shot wedge dowels, bifold doors that are each a sub-assembly in their own right, and a wall-anchoring step that IKEA's manual makes non-negotiable. The 44-step manual rewards patience — and punishes a rushed door prep with bifolds that bind or hang unevenly.
TaskMan of London assembles IDANÄS wardrobes across London, anywhere within the M25. Every build includes levelling the carcass (essential on sloping period floorboards), fitting the tip-over restraint to your wall as standard, and the fiddly final stage of seating the pivot posts and truing up the doors with the three-way hinge adjustment. Our team is DBS-checked and insured, and every build is covered by a 12-month workmanship warranty.
Send us a couple of photos on WhatsApp — the room, the wall it will stand against, and any stairs or lift on the way up — and we will confirm everything with you before you book.

Which IKEA IDANÄS wardrobe sizes we build
- IDANÄS wardrobe with bi-folding doors, white, 121x59x211 cm — article 604.588.35 (verified live on ikea.com/gb/en, 18 August 2026)
- IDANÄS wardrobe combination, white, 180x59x211 cm — article 893.882.91, made up of the bifold wardrobe plus the open wardrobe (verified live, 18 August 2026)
- IDANÄS open wardrobe, white, 59x49x211 cm — article 204.588.42 (verified live, 18 August 2026)
- IDANÄS open wardrobe, dark brown stained, 59x49x211 cm — article 804.588.39 (verified live, 18 August 2026) — same packaging as the white version, a single 51x212x12 cm box at 32.73 kg
The dark-brown stained bifold wardrobe and the dark-brown stained wardrobe combination are no longer listed on IKEA UK — their former product addresses now redirect to a category page, although the dark-brown bifold version remains on sale in the US. The dark-brown open wardrobe (804.588.39) is still current on IKEA UK, as are other dark-brown IDANÄS pieces, so the delisting should not be described as covering the whole dark-brown range. Customer-facing copy should reference the white versions only. There is no discontinuation announcement for the IDANÄS wardrobe range itself, and IDANÄS should not be described as an official successor to HEMNES.
How long IKEA IDANÄS wardrobe assembly takes
TaskMan of London working estimates, confirmed after photos on WhatsApp: 120–180 minutes for the two-door bifold wardrobe including wall anchoring and door alignment; 210–270 minutes for the 180 cm wardrobe combination (bifold unit plus open wardrobe). Door hanging and three-way hinge adjustment is the variable — a racked carcass or sloping floor adds time.
Difficulty: hard. Long builds are exactly what we are set up for — message us and we will confirm everything before you book.
Where IKEA IDANÄS wardrobe builds go wrong
The parts of this build that cost people an afternoon:
- Wedge-dowel joints are effectively one-shot: once a panel is knocked fully home the paper-honeycomb core tears if you try to separate it. Dry-check every panel's orientation (cornice end vs foot end) before the final press.
- Each bifold pair is a project in itself before anything is hung: two leaves joined by three barrel hinges taking six screws apiece (step 36), then concealed hinges, pivot fittings and the door guide rails — steps 35–40 put well over twenty screws into each door pair while it lies flat. Rushed door prep is where misalignment starts.
- Each door pair hangs on pivot posts that must click home twice — once upward into the top rail and once downward into the bottom rail (manual step 44 prints 'Click!' at both). A half-seated post is the usual cause of a door that hangs low or rubs, and it is precisely the fault that the hinge adjustment screws cannot compensate for. We check both clicks by hand before touching an adjustment screw.
- The concealed hinges have three-way adjustment (height, lateral and depth — final info page of the manual), but only adjust after both pivot posts are clicked home and the carcass is level; otherwise you chase your tail.
- Level the carcass on its four tapered solid-wood legs before hanging doors. On sloping Victorian floorboards a racked frame makes the bifolds bind in the top rail — this is a floor problem, not a hinge problem.
- The top and bottom door runner rails (step 34, 2x) clip into the front of the carcass before the doors go on, and the pivot posts click into these same rails at step 44 — so they must sit straight and fully home, and they are awkward to retrofit once the doors are hung.
- Build on carpet or a rug as the manual shows — the acrylic-painted honeycomb panels chip readily on bare boards.
- Assemble it in the room where it will live: at 121 x 59 x 211 cm finished it cannot realistically be manoeuvred out through a standard internal doorway and hallway, and the wedge-dowel construction does not tolerate being knocked apart for a move.
- Shelf pins and shelves press down onto fittings in a specific spot (step 33 shows a wrong-place X) — pressing the panel face instead of over the fitting dents the honeycomb board.
- The manual gives drill sizes for the wall fixing (8 mm masonry/hollow, 3 mm timber pilot) and supplies universal plugs that suit most solid and hollow walls — it does not specify screw lengths, so do not quote any. Scan for pipes and cables before drilling (installer practice, not IKEA's instruction).
Safety and wall fixing
This item must be secured to the wall. We fit the restraint as part of the job and will not leave it standing loose.
- Wall anchoring is not optional. The manual opens with IKEA's warning, word for word: 'Serious or fatal crushing injuries can occur from furniture tip-over. ALWAYS secure this furniture to the wall using tip-over restraints.' TaskMan of London fits the restraint as standard on every build.
- The same page lists IKEA's further precautions verbatim: 'Do not set TVs or other heavy objects on top of this product' and 'Never let children climb or hang on drawers, doors, or shelves.' IKEA's third precaution, about placing heaviest items in the lower drawer, does not apply to this unit because the IDANÄS wardrobe has no drawers — our own advice is simply to load the heaviest contents onto the lowest shelf.
- Two-person job by the manual's own icons: individual boxes run to 34 kg and the side panels need holding upright during frame assembly.
- Check the wall for hidden pipes and cables before drilling the anchor point — standard practice for the team, not an instruction in IKEA's manual, and it matters most in older London stock with surface-chased services.

Verified package data, and what it means inside the M25: the two-door wardrobe (604.588.35) ships as three boxes — 60x191x6 cm at 28 kg, 58x192x7 cm at 31.25 kg and 58x191x8 cm at 34.05 kg, about 93 kg all in. The combination adds a fourth box: the open wardrobe travels as a single 51x212x12 cm package at 32.73 kg, white or dark brown alike. A 2.12 m box will not stand in most residential lifts and will not turn a tight half-landing flat — in Victorian conversions it goes up the stairs on edge, two people, and that should be planned before delivery day, not discovered on it. The finished unit is 211 cm tall on tapered solid-wood legs: fine under typical 2.4 m-plus period ceilings and standard new-build heights, but worth flagging on WhatsApp for loft rooms or basement flats under about 2.2 m. Sloping period floorboards matter more than ceilings here — the bifold doors bind in the top rail if the carcass is not levelled first, so uneven floors are a standard part of our setup rather than a surprise. And because a rigid 211 cm carcass cannot realistically be manoeuvred through a standard internal doorway and round a hallway turn, the boxes must start in the room where it will be anchored.
Before we arrive
- Have the boxes delivered to, or moved into, the room where the wardrobe will live — it cannot be moved through doorways once built.
- Clear a floor space of roughly 2.5 x 1.5 m plus somewhere to stack three flat boxes up to 1.92 m long.
- Decide the final wall position before the visit — the unit is anchored to the wall, so it should not need repositioning afterwards.
- Send WhatsApp photos of the wall it will stand against (skirting, any visible pipes or sockets) and of the room, so the quote and fixing approach can be confirmed before booking.
- Check all delivered boxes for transit damage before assembly day.
- If you are in a flat, note lift dimensions or stair turns in your WhatsApp message: the longest wardrobe box is about 192 cm, and the open wardrobe arrives as a single 212 cm box.
- Keep children and pets out of the room during the build, and let us know ceiling height if it is under about 2.2 m.
IKEA IDANÄS wardrobe assembly FAQs
Does the IDANÄS wardrobe have to be fixed to the wall?
Yes. IKEA's manual opens with a tip-over warning and instructs you to always secure the furniture to the wall using tip-over restraints. The pack includes the wall safety fitting and universal plugs that suit most solid and hollow walls; the manual specifies an 8 mm drill for masonry or hollow walls and a 3 mm pilot for timber studs. TaskMan of London anchors every wardrobe as standard — if you rent and are worried about drilling, mention it on WhatsApp and we will talk through options with you first.
How long does assembly take?
As a working estimate from our own builds: around two to three hours for the two-door bifold wardrobe including wall fixing and door alignment, and three and a half to four and a half hours for the 180 cm combination. DIY first-timers typically need a good half day — the manual runs to 44 steps across its 44 pages, and each pair of bifold doors is assembled flat as its own sub-assembly before it is hung. Exact timing is confirmed on WhatsApp once we have seen photos of your room.
One door hangs lower than the other — can that be fixed?
Almost always, yes. The doors hang on pivot posts that must click into the top rail and again into the bottom rail; a half-seated post is the usual cause of a dropped or rubbing door, and it is the one fault the hinge adjustment screws cannot compensate for. Once the posts are seated and the carcass is level, the concealed hinges adjust for height, side and depth to true up the gaps. This is covered by our 12-month workmanship warranty on builds we carry out.
Can I use PAX interiors like KOMPLEMENT with it?
No — IDANÄS is not part of the PAX system, and KOMPLEMENT interior fittings are sized for PAX frames. The bifold wardrobe comes with its own clothes rail and adjustable shelf, and the 180 cm combination adds an open section with its own clothes rail and adjustable shelf. Neither unit has drawers. If you want a fitted interior with drawers and internal accessories, PAX is the range to look at instead.
Will the boxes fit in my lift?
The two-door wardrobe arrives in three packages of 28 kg, 31.25 kg and 34.05 kg, the longest about 192 cm. The open wardrobe is a single 212 cm box at 32.73 kg, which defeats many London residential lifts — it usually travels up the stairs at an angle, and it is a two-person carry. Send us your lift or stairwell details on WhatsApp and we will plan the carry-up as part of the visit.
Can the wardrobe be moved to another room later?
We would not recommend it. The frame is built with wedge dowels pressed into honeycomb-core panels, which lock permanently — knocking them apart tears the board. It is also 211 cm tall and will not pass through internal doorways assembled. Build it in its final room, against its final wall.
Which IDANÄS wardrobes are actually available in the UK right now?
As of 18 August 2026, IKEA UK sells the white bifold wardrobe (121x211 cm), the white open wardrobe (59x211 cm) and the white 180 cm combination of the two — all verified live on ikea.com/gb/en. The open wardrobe is also still listed in dark brown stained. What has gone from IKEA UK is the dark-brown bifold wardrobe and the dark-brown combination — both addresses now redirect to a category page, although the dark-brown bifold is still sold in the US.
