IKEA HEMNES Daybed Assembly in London

IKEA HEMNES Day-Bed Assembly in London — Fitted by TaskMan of London

The IKEA HEMNES day-bed is three pieces of furniture in one flat-pack order: a single sofa by day, a 160 cm double bed when the pull-out section rolls forward, and three large storage drawers underneath. That versatility is exactly why it is one of the longest and most error-prone single-item IKEA builds we attend — a 36-page manual, 44 numbered steps across three separately numbered sections, and a kit full of near-identical parts that punish a wrong choice several steps later.

TaskMan of London assembles HEMNES day-beds across London every week, and just as often we are called to rescue half-built ones. Our DBS-checked, insured fitters build it right first time, in its final position, and every build is covered by our 12-month workmanship warranty.

Send us WhatsApp photos of your room, the cartons and the route in, and we will confirm everything — timing, access and the full scope of the job — before you book. No surprises on the day.

Which IKEA HEMNES day-bed with 3 drawers (single sofa / double bed / storage) sizes we build

  • HEMNES day-bed frame with 3 drawers, white, 80x200 cm — article 903.493.26 (verified live on ikea.com/gb/en, 18 August 2026)
  • HEMNES day-bed frame with 3 drawers, grey, 80x200 cm — article 603.722.76 (verified live, 18 August 2026)
  • HEMNES day-bed frame with 3 drawers, grey-green, 80x200 cm — article 806.228.92 (verified live, 18 August 2026; page marked 'Limited edition')
  • IKEA UK also lists the day-bed bundled with two 80x200 cm mattresses (e.g. with two Ågotnes firm mattresses — bundle page verified live on ikea.com/gb/en, 18 August 2026); check ikea.com/gb/en for the current bundle options

As of 18 August 2026 the HEMNES day-bed remains on sale at ikea.com/gb/en in all three colours (white, grey, grey-green), and none of the product pages carries a discontinuation notice. The grey-green version is flagged as a limited edition. IKEA has published no end date for the day-bed, so any claim that it is being discontinued would be speculation.

How long IKEA HEMNES day-bed with 3 drawers (single sofa / double bed / storage) assembly takes

TaskMan of London working estimate: 120–180 minutes for one experienced fitter, with most builds landing around the 2 to 2.5 hour mark. The two-person stages — mating the pull-out/drawer unit with the backrest frame (backrest section, step 11 of the manual) and fitting the top rails onto the corner posts (backrest section, step 14) — go noticeably faster with a second pair of hands. These are our own working estimates, not IKEA figures — IKEA publishes no assembly time for this product. Send photos on WhatsApp and we confirm everything before you book.

Difficulty: hard. Long builds are exactly what we are set up for — message us and we will confirm everything before you book.

Where IKEA HEMNES day-bed with 3 drawers (single sofa / double bed / storage) builds go wrong

The parts of this build that cost people an afternoon:

  • Two nearly identical screws, part 100347 (36 supplied) and part 116894 (50 supplied), are used at alternating steps — the manual prints a crossed-out 'wrong screw' warning box at almost every rail and runner step. Use the wrong one on the pull-out guide rails or drawer runners and, in our experience, the proud head jams the runner or splits the timber, usually discovered only when the drawer or pull-out binds.
  • The pull-out section's guide rails are handed and marked CR and CL (steps 2–3 of the manual's first section). Swap them and everything still screws together — but the pull-out section runs skewed and will not mate squarely with the backrest frame later (backrest section, step 11), which means unscrewing 18 screws to swap them back.
  • Several wooden slats and battens in the kit are near-twins sorted only by count: the manual crosses out the wrong lookalike at step 19 of the first section (14x vs 13x battens) and again in the backrest section at step 7 (2x vs 12x). Fit the wrong batch early and you find out panels later, forcing a partial rebuild.
  • Eight castors are screwed to the four crossbars at step 1, before anything else exists. A castor plate screwed on slightly out of square tracks the whole pull-out section off-line — worth checking each one spins true before moving on.
  • The manual's final info page shows the day-bed sitting fully on a rug, with the half-on position crossed out. On a rug edge (or a typically out-of-level Victorian London floor) the castors drop as the pull-out rolls forward and the two halves no longer sit level as a double bed.
  • Half-turned cam locks: the drawers use 24 cam locks (part 103114) and the frame another 16 (part 103430). A cam that never bites leaves the drawer box racked out of square, so its side rails will not engage the frame runners — the classic 'drawer won't go in' callback on this product.
  • Building the backrest solo: four long bolts (105236) must engage rotating barrel nuts (108903) where the backrest panels meet the corner posts (backrest section, step 4), and the manual's two-person recommendation is there for a reason — the barrel nut slots turn out of line if a panel sags mid-bolt.

Safety and wall fixing

  • IKEA's manual shows a two-person assembly symbol, and two people are drawn at the heavy stages; the four flat packs total roughly 97 kg by IKEA's listed package weights and the assembled bed is 209 cm long — do not attempt the two-person lifts (mating the pull-out/drawer unit with the backrest frame at backrest-section step 11, fitting the top rails at step 14) or final repositioning alone.
  • The manual explicitly crosses out sitting or leaning on the part-assembled frame (backrest section, step 10) — the slatted base is not load-bearing until fully fixed.
  • The manual crosses out standing or pressing down on an open drawer (drawer section, step 9) — the runners are not designed to take body weight.
  • This day-bed is freestanding: the manual contains no wall-fixing step and no wall anchors are supplied. It is not a tip-over product in the way tall chests are, and nothing needs drilling into your wall for this build.
  • Assemble on a rug or blanket, as the manual's own diagrams show — in our experience the painted panels chip easily on hard floors, and loose fittings underfoot are a slip hazard mid-build.

IKEA HEMNES day-bed with 3 drawers (single sofa / double bed / storage) assembly in London homes

Verified from the IKEA UK product page: the day-bed arrives as four flat packs totalling roughly 97 kg by IKEA's listed package weights — two long cartons at 206x53x6 cm (26.4 kg) and 206x29x6 cm (22.01 kg), plus two at 100x84x6 cm (24.5 kg and 24 kg). The 206 cm cartons are the London problem: they will not stand in most mansion-block lift cars, so expect a two-person stair carry around Victorian half-landings, and they only just clear some conversion hallways on the diagonal. Once built, the bed is 209 cm long and cannot realistically be moved through doorways assembled, so it must be built in its final room, in its final position — and London's out-of-level period floors matter more than usual here, because the pull-out double rolls on eight castors and needs a consistent, level surface (IKEA's own manual shows it fully on a rug, with the half-on position crossed out). In a typical London second bedroom or home office, remember the footprint grows from 89 cm to about 160 cm deep when opened as a double. TaskMan of London covers all of London within the M25.

Before we arrive

  • Send us WhatsApp photos of the room, the delivery cartons, and the narrowest point of the route in (stairs, hall turns, lift door) so we can confirm everything before you book.
  • Check your route: the two longest cartons are 206 cm long (26.4 kg and 22.01 kg package weights) — they will not fit in most London lift cars, so expect a stair carry in mansion blocks and conversions.
  • Clear a floor space of roughly 3 m x 2 m for the build, plus somewhere to stand four large cartons — about 97 kg of flat pack in total, by IKEA's listed package weights.
  • Decide the bed's final position before we start: assembled it is 209 cm long, 89 cm deep and 83 cm high, and it needs clear floor in front for the pull-out, which takes the sleeping surface out to 160 cm wide as a double.
  • If you bought the frame only, have both 80x200 cm mattresses on site — the frame takes two, stacked as a single and side by side as a double.
  • Tell us if the floor is carpeted or has a rug where the bed will sit — the pull-out rolls on castors and needs a level, consistent surface (fully on a rug, never half-on, per the crossed-out diagram in IKEA's own manual).

IKEA HEMNES day-bed with 3 drawers (single sofa / double bed / storage) assembly FAQs

Is the HEMNES day-bed being discontinued? Should I buy now?

As of August 2026 the day-bed is still on sale at ikea.com/gb/en in all three colours, and IKEA has published no end date for it — though the grey-green version is flagged as a limited edition, so that colour may not be around indefinitely. If you have your eye on a specific colour it is sensible not to wait, and TaskMan of London can assemble it within days of delivery.

How long does professional assembly take?

Our working estimate is 2 to 3 hours for an experienced fitter — this is one of the longest single-item IKEA builds there is, with 44 numbered steps across a 36-page manual. Send photos of your room and route on WhatsApp and we confirm everything before you book — no surprises on the day.

Why is this build so notorious? It's just a bed.

It is really three builds in one: a pull-out bed section rolling on eight castors, a backrest frame, and three large storage drawers — 44 numbered steps across a 36-page manual. The kit includes two nearly identical screws used at alternating steps and handed left/right guide rails; get either wrong and the pull-out or drawers bind, usually after everything looks finished. That is why it is our most common 'half-built rescue' product.

Does the frame come with mattresses?

The standard frame is frame-only and takes two 80x200 cm mattresses: stacked on top of each other as a single sofa-bed, side by side when the pull-out is extended into a 160 cm double. IKEA UK also lists the day-bed bundled with two mattresses included — check the current options on ikea.com/gb/en. We can unbox and place your mattresses as part of the visit.

Does it need fixing to the wall?

No. The HEMNES day-bed is freestanding — IKEA's assembly manual contains no wall-fixing step and supplies no wall anchors for it, so nothing gets drilled into your wall. That makes it a good choice for rented London flats.

Will it fit up my stairs and in my room?

Flat-packed, the awkward pieces are two 206 cm-long cartons — fine on most straight stairs, tight in some conversions, and too long for most lift cars. Assembled, the bed is 209 cm long and 89 cm deep, extending to about 160 cm deep as a double, so you need that clear floor in front. WhatsApp us photos of the room and route and we will tell you honestly before booking.

What if it's assembled but the pull-out doesn't slide or line up?

That is almost always swapped CR/CL guide rails, a wrong screw in a runner, or the bed sitting half on a rug or an uneven floor. We regularly correct part-built or badly built HEMNES day-beds — and every build we complete is covered by our 12-month workmanship warranty, carried out by a DBS-checked, insured team.
