IKEA MICKE Desk Assembly in London

IKEA MICKE Desk Assembly in London

The IKEA MICKE is the desk TaskMan of London assembles more than any other across London flats — compact and flat-packed thin enough for almost any lift. Our DBS-checked, insured fitters build every current variant, from the little 73x50 cm desk to the two-box corner workstation, and every assembly carries our 12-month workmanship warranty.

Booking starts on WhatsApp: send photos of the unopened boxes (label end showing) and the room, and we confirm the exact variant, the time to allow and everything else before you book — no surprises on the day.

MICKE looks simple but is a genuinely handed build with look-alike fittings and honeycomb-cored panels that punish power tools and wrong guesses — the details below are why people call us after starting it themselves.

MICKE is not being discontinued. IKEA's US newsroom announcement of 1 October 2024 covers only the MALM and HEMNES chests of drawers, which are being replaced by STORKLINTA and GULLABERG under STURDY Act stability-safety changes by the end of 2026. MICKE was not named in it, and all six MICKE products on this page were live on IKEA's UK site when TaskMan of London re-checked on 18 August 2026.

How long IKEA MICKE desk assembly takes

TaskMan of London working estimates, confirmed against your WhatsApp photos before booking: 73x50 desk 45-60 minutes; 105x50 desk 60-90 minutes (the most involved of the straight desks — two drawer boxes, a hinged door, two shelves and the metal loop leg); 142x50 desk 60-90 minutes; corner workstation 90-135 minutes (two flat packs, back-panel-heavy build); drawer unit 40-60 minutes; add-on unit a further 30-45 minutes on top of a desk build. These are our own estimates, not IKEA figures.

Difficulty: moderate. Long builds are exactly what we are set up for — message us and we will confirm everything before you book.

Where IKEA MICKE desk builds go wrong

The parts of this build that cost people an afternoon:

  • The build is handed and the manual forks: at step 9 you choose pedestal-left or pedestal-right, and the mirrored instructions restart on page 25 of manual AA-476615-12. Every panel is pre-drilled for both configurations, so parts fit the wrong way round convincingly. Decide which side the storage goes before opening a single fitting bag — undoing a wrong-handed carcass means backing cams and dowels out of honeycomb board, which weakens the holes.
  • The 105x50 pack contains three nearly identical cam-lock discs (part numbers 110126, 103430 and 103114, in quantities of 10, 8 and 4) plus two look-alike small screws (100365 for the drawer runners, 113287 for the hinge mounting plates). The manual prints crossed-out wrong-part warnings at steps 3, 8, 12, 14, 15 and 16 because mix-ups are that common. A wrong cam spins without clamping and chews out the hole; the coarse hinge screw driven into a runner hole splits the panel edge.
  • The drawer runners screw to the inner faces of the side panels at steps 12 and 15, before the carcass is closed up. Miss this and you cannot get a screwdriver square to the holes once the box is together — the only fix is partial disassembly.
  • The panels are particleboard skins over a recycled-paper honeycomb core (stated on the IKEA product page). Only the pre-drilled positions have solid material behind them; a freehand screw anywhere else finds air. This also means power drivers strip the cam and dowel holes very easily — final tightening is best done by hand. Have the hammer ready too: there are 20 dowels (part 101344) to tap home, plus four nail-type fasteners (part 110519) driven at step 6 for the drawer backs.
  • The back panels are not tap-in hardboard: they locate on dowels and pull tight with cam locks, and they provide the desk's rigidity. The manual explicitly crosses out fitting the rough textured face outwards at step 18, and its insets at steps 4 and 20 show the textured face so you can identify it — get it wrong and you will be looking at raw brown board through the leg opening. Seat the panels fully before turning any cams or the carcass assembles out of square.
  • The metal loop leg fixes with three screws plus two hex bolts that step 29 shows being tightened by hand — fingers, not tools. Snug the bolts, square and level the desk in position, then tighten; fully torquing them with the desk out of level locks a wobble in.
  • The wide drawer engages its runners at an angle: step 30 shows it tilted nose-down so the wheels drop behind the runner stops. Pushed in flat and forced, the wheels ride over the stop and the drawer either jams or falls out when fully extended.
  • The flexible cable rail (part 121030) is fitted mid-build at step 24 with the supplied hex key — it is not a last step, so do not plan to add it later. Only the desktop cable grommet and the cover caps come at the very end (step 35). Either way, decide where the cables will drop before the desk is pushed against the wall, because the alignment is only accessible from behind.

Safety and wall fixing

  • IKEA's stated limits for the 105x50 desk, verified on the live UK product page on 18 August 2026: maximum evenly distributed load 50 kg, and no more than 15 kg concentrated on a small area of the top.
  • When the MICKE add-on unit sits on a desk, IKEA's page states the whole combination must be placed against a wall to avoid the risk of tipping. This is a placement requirement, not a wall-drilling requirement.
  • The desk is certified to EN 12521 and EN 1730 (domestic table strength, durability and stability standards), per the IKEA product page.
  • Two-person assembly is pictured in the manual's opening safety panel on page 2 — mainly for flipping the assembled desk upright without racking the cam joints.
  • The drawer unit is on castors: on smooth hard floors (common in London new-builds) it will roll when a drawer is pulled hard — our installers point this out at handover, particularly in children's rooms.
  • Assemble on a rug or blanket as the manual shows: the white painted edges chip on bare hard floor.

IKEA MICKE desk assembly in London homes

Every current MICKE ships flat and thin, which is why it is the desk we assemble most across London flats. Verified package data (all package weights): 73x50 desk — one box, 78x52x12 cm, 15.10 kg (fits in any hatchback, one-person carry to a top-floor walk-up); 105x50 desk — one box, 112x74x11 cm, 28.00 kg (an awkward two-person carry on communal stairs, but flat enough for any lift); 142x50 desk — one box, 146x52x9 cm, 24.90 kg (the length, not the weight, is the problem — it will not stand up in many small Victorian-conversion lifts and needs turning room on half-landings); corner workstation — two packages, 103x103x8 cm at 24.00 kg plus 80x56x11 cm at 17.98 kg (the metre-square flat pack is the one that snags in narrow lift doors); drawer unit — one box, 17.96 kg; add-on unit — one thin 128 cm box, 10.20 kg. Total package weight for the popular desk-plus-drawer-unit combo is about 46 kg across two boxes — well within a normal two-person carry, and everything sits within the M25 coverage TaskMan of London already drives daily.

Before we arrive

  • Send WhatsApp photos of the unopened boxes (label end showing the article number) and the room — that is how TaskMan of London confirms the variant, the time to allow and everything else before you book.
  • Decide before the visit which side you want the storage pedestal on — the build is mirrored and this is the first decision in the manual, not something to change halfway.
  • Clear a floor area of roughly 2 x 1.5 m near the desk's final position, ideally carpeted or with a rug down.
  • Keep all packaging until the desk is checked over — and if you have had the boxes a while, open the fittings bag and check it is present before booking; missing hardware is an IKEA spare-parts request, not something any fitter can conjure.
  • If the desk is going against a wall with sockets, decide which socket the cables will drop to — the cable rail is fitted partway through the build and the grommet before the desk is pushed into place.
  • For the corner workstation, note there are two flat packs, the larger a 103 x 103 cm square — tell us about narrow communal stairs or small lifts when you book.

IKEA MICKE desk assembly FAQs

How much does MICKE desk assembly cost in London?

We confirm everything before you book rather than quoting blind from a rate card. Send WhatsApp photos of the unopened boxes and the room, and TaskMan of London confirms the exact variant, the time to allow and the total in writing before you commit — no surprises on the day. For scale, our working estimates put a single straight desk at 45-90 minutes of assembly time.

Which MICKE variants are actually available in the UK right now?

As of 18 August 2026, ikea.com/gb/en lists the 73x50 desk, the 105x50 desk (2 drawers, 1 hinged door and 2 adjustable shelves), the 142x50 two-drawer desk, the 100x142 corner workstation, the drawer unit with drop-file storage and the high add-on unit. White and black-brown run across the range, with anthracite-red and white-anthracite options on the 105x50.

Does a MICKE desk need fixing to the wall?

The desk on its own does not — it is a freestanding piece and IKEA's manual includes no wall fixing. The one requirement IKEA does state is that a desk with the add-on unit on top must be placed against a wall to avoid tipping. If you want belt-and-braces anti-tip restraint on top of that — common in children's rooms — our fitters can add one, checking your wall type from photos first.

Is MICKE being discontinued like MALM and HEMNES?

No. IKEA's US newsroom announcement of 1 October 2024 covers only the MALM and HEMNES chests of drawers, which are being replaced by STORKLINTA and GULLABERG under STURDY Act safety changes by the end of 2026 — not the full ranges, and MICKE was not named in it. All six MICKE products above were live on IKEA's UK site when we checked on 18 August 2026.

Why do you ask which side I want the drawers before you arrive?

The MICKE build is mirrored — the manual splits into left-handed and right-handed instructions partway through, and every panel is pre-drilled for both. Choosing at the start costs nothing; changing your mind after the carcass is together means unwinding cam locks from honeycomb board, which weakens the joints. It is the single most common self-assembly regret we see with this desk.

Will the boxes fit up my stairs and in my lift?

Mostly yes — MICKE ships flat and thin. The 73x50 is one box at a 15.10 kg package weight that most people can manage alone. The 105x50 is a single 28.00 kg box at 112 x 74 cm — a two-person carry on communal stairs. The awkward ones are the 142x50 (a 146 cm-long box that will not stand upright in some small lifts) and the corner workstation's 103 x 103 cm square pack. Tell us your access when you book and we plan the carry into the visit.

Can you dismantle and rebuild a MICKE desk when I move flat?

We can, but we will be honest: the panels are honeycomb-cored and the cam and dowel joints lose grip each time they are broken and remade. A MICKE usually survives one careful dismantle-and-rebuild; we will tell you on inspection if yours will not, rather than rebuild a wobbly desk for the sake of it. All our assembly work carries a 12-month workmanship warranty.
