# Children's Loft Bed & House Bed Assembly

## Children's Loft Bed and House Bed Assembly Across London

TaskMan of London builds children's loft beds, high sleepers, mid sleepers, cabin beds and house-frame beds anywhere inside the M25 - the largest and most awkward flat-pack beds sold in the UK, with several heavy cartons, hundreds of fixings, and a structure a child will climb on every day.

"Children's loft bed" covers four different products. A low house or Montessori floor bed sits a few centimetres off the ground. A cabin bed puts drawers and cupboards under the mattress. A mid sleeper - the house or treehouse frame with storage stairs, a window cut-out, LED lighting and sometimes a slide - raises the base to around chest height. A high sleeper goes higher again, with a desk or wardrobe below. Tell us which you have and we will tell you what the build involves.

### What We Build

- **High sleepers:** raised beds with a desk, wardrobe or shelving underneath.
- **Mid sleepers and house-frame beds:** roof rails, window cut-outs, canopy poles and a play space below.
- **Cabin beds:** lower frames with drawers, cupboards and pull-out desks in the base.
- **Storage staircases, slides and ladders:** stepped drawer units that replace the ladder and carry part of the bed's weight.
- **LED lighting kits and USB desk ports**, and low house or Montessori floor beds for younger children.

### Why a Loft Bed Is Not a Normal Flat-Pack Bed

- **It arrives in pieces, sometimes over several days:** the big B&Q house beds ship as multiple heavy parcels that do not always arrive together, and one IKEA SMÅSTAD loft bed comes as 21 packages. We check every carton against the hardware list before the first screw goes in.
- **Three joint systems in one bed:** through-bolts and barrel nuts hold the frame, cam locks and dowels hold the drawer and stair carcasses, and plain screws hold trims into raw board.
- **Mixed materials:** solid pine that splits without a pilot hole, foil-wrapped chipboard that strips under a power driver, and honeycomb-filled board that holds nothing outside its designed inserts.
- **Two people, by the manufacturer's own instruction:** IKEA states two people are needed for its SMÅSTAD loft bed, and the manuals say to lift it with two. The gables are close to two metres of sheet material.
- **It has to be built where it stands:** the instructions tell you to build it where it will stand, and a finished mid sleeper will not come back through a London doorway or round a Victorian stair turn.
- **Sequence matters:** leave everything finger-tight, square the frame, then tighten by hand. In the wrong order the panels bow and the bed knocks for years.

### The Fiddly Bits, and What We Do About Them

- **Mattress depth and guard rails:** every bed in this class carries a marked maximum mattress thickness, and the spread is huge - the Noa & Nani Luka treehouse midsleeper is marked 10 cm, a BTM slide bed at B&Q 12 cm, and IKEA's SMÅSTAD 20 cm. A 22 cm pocket-sprung single on a bed rated for 10 cm quietly lowers the guard rail. We check that figure against the mattress you own, fit the rails to their marked positions and pull-test them.
- **Storage stairs:** each step is its own cam-and-dowel carcass and the stack becomes a structural leg of the bed. One racked box and the treads go out of level, so we square each carcass and check level across the flight.
- **LED strips and drivers:** the strip goes in before the roof or gable closes, the adhesive needs a clean surface on raw board, and the adaptor lead has to reach a socket without crossing the ladder or slide, or hanging where a child can pull it.
- **Ladders and slides:** ladders and storage stairs on a high bed have to be permanently fixed, not just rested in place, and we fit them that way. A slide is also the deepest part in the box and pushes the bed further into the room than most people measure for.
- **Wall anchoring and anti-tip straps:** dot-and-dab plasterboard over masonry and lath-and-plaster in period conversions both need a fixing that reaches something solid behind the skin, not a plug in the board. We carry both.
- **Ceiling height and footprint:** IKEA asks for a minimum 240 cm ceiling for the SMÅSTAD loft bed; one slide bed at B&Q needs a 2.39 m clear run and is 1.46 m wide, which is the number that catches people out. Send your room dimensions and we will say honestly whether it fits.
- **The gap behind the bed:** the printed warning is specific - the distance between the top safety barrier and the wall or any adjoining structure should be no more than 75 mm, or more than 230 mm. We set the bed hard against the wall or clearly off it, never in between.

### Safety, BS EN 747 and the Under-Six Guidance

BS EN 747-1:2024 is the current safety, strength and durability standard for bunk beds and high beds. Older beds carry the BS EN 747-1:2012+A1:2015 marking, which is the same family of requirements. It applies where the upper surface of the bed base is 600 mm or more above the floor, so most mid sleepers and every high sleeper fall inside its scope, while a low house or Montessori floor bed does not.

A bed in scope must be permanently marked with the manufacturer or importer's name, the maximum mattress thickness - often as a line on the post rather than a figure - the number and year of the standard, and the warning that it is not suitable for children under six years because of the risk of injury from falls. Wall-attachment warnings, where they apply, come in the instructions. That applies to the raised sleeping surface, not the shape of the frame - so if your child is under six, a low house bed or a cabin bed with the base under 600 mm is the honest answer, and we would rather say so before you order.

We build to the manufacturer's instructions, permanently fix what must be permanently fixed, and leave the booklet and warning label with you. Re-check the fastenings every few months, as the manuals ask.
